Day 1 (Friday):
Reception @ airport and transfer to FEDECOCAGUA, Federation of Coffee Cooperatives in Guatemala. Introduction seminar on traditional vs. organic coffee cultivation, and the situation of small coffee producers in Guatemala related to Fair Trade movement, followed by coffee degustation (1 1/2 hours). Then transfer to Antigua. Overnight in colonial-style hotel.
Day 2 (Saturday):
Breakfast. Transfer from Antigua to Palín for visit of the FEDECOCAGUA commonly used processing plant for coffee exports. Coffee from all cooperatives affiliated to FEDECOCAGUA is processed here, some from traditional cultivation, some already grown under regulations for ecological, organic and fair trade quality. After lunch (not included), you will be brought to a nearby coffee cooperative. Continue to Panajachel. Overnight.
Day 3 (Sunday):
Breakfast. Meet with representatives of Fundation Atitlán („Amigos del Lago“) to learn about environmental issues of conventional coffee production. Afterwards, you have the opportunity to take a boat launch and visit indigenous villages at lakeshore. Return to Pana. FREE TIME for shopping. Overnight.
Day 4 (Monday):
Return after breakfast to Antigua, where you will meet with representatives of a local coffee cooperative-in-spe to learn about living and working conditions of a small coffee producer. During the afternoon walking tour, you will visit the coffee museum in Jocotenango, and some of the main churches and ruins of the colonial city of Antigua Guatemala. Overnight.
Day 5 (Tuesday):
Breakfast. Early transfer from Antigua to Cobán. Visit to Biotopo del Quetzal where you hike one of the beautiful nature trails. Continue to Cobán, the capital of Alta Verapaz. Meet with local interest groups involved in integral community development for project presentation and discussion of area-specific problems and challenges. Optional visit the Principe Maya Museum in the evening. Overnight.
Day 6 (Wednesday):
Breakfast @ Café Tirol, one of the oldest coffee shops in Cobán. Then transfer to the little village of San Juan Chamelco with its beautiful church, and further to explore the spectacular Rey Marcos Caves. Afterwards, you start your „coffee safari“ with 4x4 vehicles on the Polochic route - Tactic, Tamahú, Tucurú, La Tinta and Senahú. Upon arrival @ Finca Secansin, you will be guided through the coffee and cardomom processing facilities, with a mini seminar on organic coffee and cardomom production and its impact on local community stimulation. Overnight.
Day 7 (Thursday):
Breakfast. Full-day excursion to Semuc-Champey National Park- partly with 4x4 and ferry boat, partly hiking (box-lunch and drinks not included). FREE TIME to swim and relax. Return to finca. Overnight.
Day 8 (Friday):
Breakfast. Leave the lush jungles of Finca Secansin for San Cristobal Verapaz, where you meet with representatives of ACTASA, independent coffee producers who are supported by the Neuman Group. Visit the regional museum "El Trapiche" (sugar cane museum) in Salamá (Baja Verapaz). Return to Guatemala City. Overnight.
Day 9 (Saturday):
Breakfast. Drop-off @ airport.
