Option #1: Study & Travel Antigua-Petén

4-week study & travel program, including 2 weeks 1:1 language training in Antigua and 2 weeks in San Andrés (Petén) plus 2 weekend tours to Tikal and Lake Atitlán & Chichi.


Extra overnights at homestay available.


Included services:

  • Airport pick-up and drop-off- 80 hours of private Spanish lessons (20h/wk in Antigua and Petén),
  • Lodging with Guatemalan host family in Antigua and im Petén, and in country-typical 3* hotels while traveling,
  • Weekend excursions to the Mayan ruins of Tikal and Lake Atitlán & Chichi
  • 3 healthy meals (except Sundays and on trips)
  • all ground and boat transportation as indicated in program itinerary

Not included: Other meals, drinks, tips, other transfers or guided tours.


Scheduled program dates: Program start any Sunday.


Program Itinerary:

Day 1 (Sunday):
Arrival at International Airport La Aurora in Guatemala City. Meet & greet, and transfer to your homestay in Antigua. Overnight.


Day 2-6 (Monday to Friday):
On your first day, you will be picked up from homestay and accompanied to your language school, where you will pass an entry exam to determine your Spanish level. This applies for morning AND afternoon students (only in high season). You will discuss your learning plan with your teacher and set achievable goals like grammar review and awakening of formerly learned vocabulary.


Depending if you are assigned to the morning or to the afternoon, you will be taken on an orientation tour (departing from your school @ 10:00am or @ 16:30pm), where you will learn about important landmarks such as banks, post office, main market, hot spot places etc. Make sure you are given a walking map!


Classes are held from 08-12:00pm from Monday to Friday, or from 14-18:00pm for afternoon students.Class schedule and assigned teacher do generally not change throughout your language program. Extracurricular afternoon activities are offered to increase cultural immersion. You will be given the activity schedule upon arrival in Guatemala.


Day 7-8 (Saturday-Sunday):
Leave early for Panajachel (2˝ hours driving time). Start boat tour of Lake Atitlán visiting 3 villages at lakeshore. You have around 1 hour in each village to appreciate the cultural diversity and explore the area. Return late afternoon to Pana. Overnight.


Morning transfer from Pana to Chichicastenango (1 hour driving time), where you will have free time to stroll thru the colorful indigenous market and visit Santo Tomás church. Return transportation for Antigua leaves @ approx. 14:00pm (2˝ hours driving time). Overnight @ host family.


Day 9-13 (Monday to Friday):
You will focus on fluency building and communication skills throughout this week of Spanish instruction in Antigua. Schedule your activity program, climbing Pacaya volcano is a MUST, ask our staff for details, also available, mountain-biking, horseback riding and Salsa dancing!!!!!!!Lodging with host family throughout the week.


Day 14-15 (Saturday-Sunday):
Early transfer to the TIKAL JETS HANGAR in Guatemala City and flight to Flores. Transfer to Tikal National Park. Half-day guided tour. Lunch. FREE AFTERNOON. Make sure to watch sunset from one of the temples!! Overnight.

Breakfast. FREE MORNING. Visit onsite museums. Return transfer to Flores leaves @ 14:00pm. You will be picked up by Volunteer Petén at Flores airport and take the project. Overnight @ host family.


Day 16-22 (Saturday-Sunday):
You continue to reinforce your grammar and communication skills in the third week of language classes, now in San Andrés (Petén). It is also a good time to learn about Volunteer Petén’s activities trail maintenance, reforestation, tree nursery management, organic farming, and ecological restoration, community projects like the rural library and the ferrocement water tanks, environmental education for local school kids and many others.


Day 23-27 (Monday to Friday):
Your last week of language instruction, enjoy it! Class schedule is from 08:00am to 12:00pm. The school also offers several options to participate in some of the ongoing ecological activities. Overnight @ host family.


Day 28 (Saturday):
Make your way back to Flores airport (boat, bus and taxi transportation not included). It is really easy and the school staff is happy to help. Check-in at Flores Airport is @ approx. 15:00pm, the return flight to Guatemala City leaves @ 17:30pm. Transfer to basic hotel near airport. Overnight.


Day 29 (Sunday):
You need to be at the airport at least 2 hours before departure of your international flight. Depending on your departure time, you will be dropped off at the airport (operated by hotel).
